A Great DIY Project
Basically, your home is going to smell like whatever your carpet smells like. Sure, we can mask the scent with plug-in air fresheners, or a nice candle, but it’s the carpet that holds the odor.
I’m not daring you to smell your carpet. Just trust me on this one. I use to have a job of removing carpets from homes that were having them replaced. So, please please trust me. It was through this job conversations took place about what to do to keep the carpet fresh, so it lasts longer.
There is a solution we discovered through a bit of research that was eco-friendly and a great solution. Not to mention it is very inexpensive. Besides a few ingredients all that is needed is a vacuum. Give it a try and you will see the results.
You will need only 3 ingredients. They are all easily available at any Walmart, Target etc.
Borax has been around for years. It is used in many laundry and household cleaning products.
Baking Soda has so many uses. Everything from keeping a refrigerator fresh to using it to bake.
Essential Oil. Now, that’s a fun one. Wikipedia says. An oil is “essential” in the sense that it contains the “essence of” the plant’s fragrance. The cool thing is it comes in so many scents, so you can make your house smell like anything you enjoy.
Start by combining the borax and baking soda in a glass or plastic bowl.
Add around 30 drops of your essential oil(s) of choice.
Stir to combine until the mixture is free of lumps.
Transfer powder to an empty shaker container, or a jar with a dispenser top. (An empty parmesan cheese container would work nicely!)
Shake the powder onto your carpets, and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes before vacuuming thoroughly.
You will notice that fresh scent immediately. I like mixing it up and trying different oils every time I vacuum. I get a lot of compliments. I hope this helps.
